The Annual Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensive in CT (BBASI CT) is designed to provide expert training for serious ballet students (ages 9-14) through unique instruction under leading teachers from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. BBASI CT is a rigorous ballet training program conducted in Russian language, with the assistance of English-speaking translators, that offers pre-professional ballet training through 1) class instruction, 2) open classes/performances, and 3) other activities at locations on and off campus (please visit the “Curriculum” page for details). The Program is specifically designed to achieve individual progress in ballet training with a strong focus on the precision of technique, increased strength, and greater musicality. To enhance the training experience and to build a non-competitive, collaborative environment, BBASI CT offers participants an unmatched summer experience comprising of cultural immersion, supplemental activities, introduction to Russian language studies, and exciting off-campus trips.

boysclass

BBASI CT offers both a residency and a day program option (day students will have limited participation in non-ballet activities). The Program is located at the prestigious Loomis Chaffee boarding school in the quaint town of Windsor, CT. The beautiful 300-acre private school campus includes dance studios, vast athletic facilities, indoor swimming pool, cafeteria, health center, and encompasses natural fields, woods, and lake areas. The program may also utilize a nearby theater for its visitors’ showcase/open class day and final performance events, as well as for some rehearsals. All students and staff are housed at the Loomis Chaffee dorms. BBASI CT is certified by the State of CT Office of Early Childhood as a fully licensed overnight youth camp. The Program is staffed with Program Directors, Senior staff, counselors, life guards, nursing staff, an off-site medical director, and volunteer parent chaperons who are additionally used for off-site trips. The campus itself is managed and operated by Loomis Chaffee’s year round professional staff.

The Program’s overall environment is non-competitive, and a strong emphasis is put on teamwork, support, and building friendships that last a lifetime.  While RAF takes great care to ensure the well-being of participants and a safe, collaborative environment, our ability to do so depends, in part, on serious preparation of participants and their families for the experience. Participants applying to BBASI CT are expected be mature, focused on achieving individual progress and willing to work hard to obtain it, and know and abide by all Program rules and requirements.

Participants exhibiting exceptional talent may be recommended for year-round study at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow

Curriculum

Curriculum and Sample Schedule

BBASI CT is open to females and males, ages 9-14.
Participants must have prior ballet training to be considered for the program.  Ballet classes are conducted in groups and organized by participants’ age and skill levels, as demonstrated during the audition process.  RAF’s audition process, and/or past enrollment of a Participant in RAF’s programs, serves only as a limited indicator of Participant’s preparedness for the Program and/or group placement. Participant’s level placement may be adjusted during the first few days at the exclusive discretion of the Program. Training is conducted through observation, individual participation, interactive participation with other participants, and manual/hands-on corrections and demonstrations by Academy’s Teachers. In partnering and at other points of the training, participants will be paired with other participants, all of whom are on a pre-professional level.  The participants applying to this program should be mature, focused, and able to monitor and moderate the rigor of his/her training within the context of instruction aimed at assisting participants to achieve individual progress.  At the conclusion of the Program, all participants will receive an assessment of their progress from the Academy’s Teachers.

A visitors’ showcase/open class will be held at the conclusion of the first session, and a final performance at the end of second session giving participants the opportunity to showcase the technique and repertoire acquired during BBASI CT.

While both 6-week and second session Participants will be featured in the final performance, the extent of one’s participation in the performance may be based, in part, on merit, student’s participation in class throughout the program, and artistic decisions involved in the performance’s planning. Please note that the schedule of the last week of each session may change in order to accommodate rehearsals.

Auditions

BBASI auditions are a great opportunity for dancers and families to meet Program staff *, learn about the different programs, and ask questions.  The auditions are similar to the BBASI Program in that they tend to be challenging, but are non-competitive in their environment.  Dancers should treat the audition as a class and try their individual best.  BBASI staff respects that dancers come from different training backgrounds, are on different levels, and are of varying ages.  Each dancer is evaluated within the context of his/her individual abilities, and with the goal of ensuring that they can obtain progress through the program.  Successful BBASI candidates demonstrate: age appropriate skill and coordination, musicality, commitment to achieving progress through hard work and dedication, and appreciation for a collaborative and non-competitive environment.
* While during BBASI all Program classes are taught by Bolshoi Ballet Academy's Teachers, please note that as the Academy is in session during the Auditions Period, local teachers are used for the Auditions.
