The Annual Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensive in CT (BBASI CT) is designed to provide expert training for serious ballet students (ages 9-14) through unique instruction under Master Teachers from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. BBASI CT is a rigorous ballet training program, conducted in Russian language with the assistance of English-speaking translators, designed to offer pre-professional ballet training through 1) class instruction, 2) performances, and 3) other activities at locations on and off campus (please review sample schedules for more details). The program is specifically designed to achieve individual progress in ballet training through a focus on the clarity of technique, increased strength, and greater musicality. At the same time, BBASI CT offers participants an unmatched summer experience comprising of cultural immersion, extracurricular activities, introduction to Russian language studies, and exciting off-campus trips.

BBASI CT offers both a residency and a day program option (day students will have limited participation in non-ballet activities). The program is located at the prestigious Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut. The beautiful 100-acre private school campus has four large dance studios, two state-of-the-art athletic facilities, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a performing arts theater. It is a safe, quiet environment that is ideal for younger students who may be experiencing a Summer Intensive away for the first time. BBASI CT is certified by the State of CT Department of Health as a fully licensed overnight camp. The program is staffed with a Program Director, Senior staff, counselors, life guards, a medical director, nursing staff and others who are necessary in providing a safe environment for minors.

Ballet classes are conducted in groups and organized by participants’ age and skill levels, as demonstrated during the audition process. A participant’s level placement may be adjusted during the first few days at the exclusive discretion of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy Master Teachers. At the conclusion of the program, all participants will receive from the Master Teachers an assessment of their progress and advice for furthering their training. A Class Observation Day will be held at the conclusion of the first three weeks of the program. A final performance will give participants enrolled in the six-week and the second three-week sessions the opportunity to showcase the repertoire acquired during BBASI CT. While all participants will be featured, the extent of one’s participation in the performance may be based, in part, on merit, student’s participation in class throughout the program, and artistic decisions involved in the performance’s planning.

In addition to ballet classes, BBASI CT has a full itinerary of extracurricular activities. Attendance and participation in all ballet classes is mandatory. While attendance at extracurricular activities is mandatory, participation is optional. (Meaning, if a participant doesn’t want to engage in Russian language classes, s/he will still be required to attend, but can engage in some other quiet, non-disruptive individual activity.)

The participants applying to this program should be focused on achieving individual progress and willing to work hard to obtain it. Having said that, the overall environment of BBASI CT is non-competitive and a strong emphasis is made on teamwork, support, and building friendships that last a lifetime.

Interested participants will have the unique opportunity to audition for enrollment in the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow.
