BBA Summer Intensive NYC 2016 Program Dates:
June 27-August 5, 2016 – 6-week session culminating in a Final Performance.
June 27-July 15, 2016 – 3-week session culminating in a day of Open Classes.
July 18-August 5, 2016 – 3-week session culminating in a Final Performance.
The Annual Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensive in NYC (BBASI NY) is designed to provide expert training for serious ballet students (ages 15+) through unique instruction under teachers from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. BBASI is a rigorous ballet training program, conducted in Russian language with assistance of English speaking translators, designed to offer pre-professional ballet training through 1) class instruction, 2) performances, and 3) other activities at locations on and off campus (please review sample schedules for details). The program is specifically designed to achieve individual progress in ballet training through a focus on the clarity of technique, increased strength and greater musicality. BBASI NY offers both a residency and a day program (day students will be limited in the non-ballet training activities they will be able to participate in).
Classes are conducted in groups and organized by participants’ age and skill levels, as demonstrated during the audition process. A participant’s level placement may be adjusted during the first few days of each session, at the exclusive discretion of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy Teachers. At the conclusion of the Program all participants will receive an assessment of their progress and advice for furthering their training by the Academy Teachers.
A Class Observation Day will be held at the conclusion of the first three weeks of the program. A Final Performance will give participants enrolled in the six-week and the second three-week sessions the opportunity to showcase the repertoire acquired during BBASI. While all participants will be featured, the extent of one’s participation in the performance may be based, in part, on merit, student’s participation in class throughout the program, and artistic decisions involved in the performance’s planning.
While RAF takes great care to ensure the well-being of participants and a safe, collaborative program environment, our ability to do so depends, in part, on serious preparation of participants and their families for the experience. Participants applying to BBASI NY are expected to be: mature and focused, able to safely engage in independent time outside of class with few organized activities, know and comply with all program rules and requirements, and make responsible decisions in navigating New York City. While the program has volunteer parent chaperones for supervision of program’s group activities, students are not supervised individually. Nevertheless, an evening curfew, class attendance, healthy eating and lifestyle, and other rules will be strictly enforced by the chaperones and program staff (those who are 18 and over will have modified rules and regulations).
Interested participants will have the unique opportunity to audition for enrollment in the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow. Furthermore, one Female and one Male participant, enrolled in a six-week session of the Summer Intensive, will be selected for a RAF Performing Scholarship in Moscow which will enable them to perform at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy’s Gala Performance in Moscow!
(*1st Place Male and Female Winner will be provided with visa support, economy air travel from NYC to Moscow and back, accommodations at the Academy, and training at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy)
(**2nd Place Male and Female Winner assumes all costs associated with the opportunity)

We welcome all serious classical ballet students and dancers to take part in the BBASI audition process. Please know that your participation in a live audition does not obligate you for enrollment in the actual BBASI Program. The auditions are a great opportunity for dancers and families to meet BBASI staff *, learn about the different programs and ask questions face to face. The auditions are similar to the BBASI Program in that they tend to be challenging, but are non-competitive in their environment. All dancers should treat the audition as a class and try their individual best. BBASI audition staff understands that dancers come from different training backgrounds, are on different levels and are of a varying age. Each dancer is evaluated strictly within the context of his/her individual abilities, with the goal to ensure that they can be successful in the program. Dancers who are successful in the BBASI Program demonstrate: age appropriate skill and coordination level, musicality, strong desire to achieve progress in their training through hard work and dedication, and thrive in a collaborative and non-competitive environment. * While during BBASI all Program classes are taught by Bolshoi Ballet Academy's Teachers, please note that as the Academy is in session during the Auditions Period, local teachers are used for the Auditions.
IMPORTANT NOTE: There are two steps to registering for an audition. You must first create a profile on CampSite. After you have created a profile, click on the "enrollment" tab on your BBASI Dashboard to enroll your dancer in an audition. You have not successfully enrolled until you have been prompted to choose a date/location/time and pay the $35 fee.
WHEN TO ARRIVE: Please be reminded that dancers should arrive no later than 30 min prior to the start of their audition to check in with BBASI staff and to have time to warm up.
WHAT TO BRING: Headshot and first arabesque photo (these do not have to be professionally done, but should be around size 5"x7" and labeled on the back with name and age as of June 27, 2016) and pointe shoes (if applicable).
DRESS CODE: For females: dark leotard and pink tights / For males: black tights and shoes, white shirt.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR RETURNING STUDENTS: If you attended a BBASI program in summer 2015 and are registering for an audition, click here to login to your BBASI Dashboard (you do not need to create a new profile).
