The Annual Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensive in NYC (BBASI NY) is designed to provide expert training for serious ballet students (ages 15+) through unique instruction under Teachers from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. BBASI is a rigorous ballet training program, conducted in Russian language with assistance of English speaking translators, designed to offer pre-professional ballet training through 1) class instruction, 2) performances, and 3) other activities at locations on and off campus (please review sample schedules for details). The program is specifically designed to achieve individual progress in ballet training through a focus on the clarity of technique, increased strength and greater musicality. BBASI NY offers both a residency and a day program (day students will be limited in the non-ballet training activities they will be able to participate in).  Bobrovainclass

Classes are conducted in groups and organized by participants’ age and skill levels, as demonstrated during the audition process. A participant’s level placement may be adjusted during the first few days of each session, at the exclusive discretion of the Bolshoi Ballet Academy Teachers. At the conclusion of the Program all participants will receive an assessment of their progress and advice for furthering their training by the Academy Teachers.

Jhaelin McQuay_&_Amber Ray_PartneringA Class Observation Day will be held at the conclusion of the first three weeks of the program. A Final Performance will give participants enrolled in the six-week and the second three-week sessions the opportunity to showcase the repertoire acquired during BBASI. While all participants will be featured, the extent of one’s participation in the performance may be based, in part, on merit, student’s participation in class throughout the program, and artistic decisions involved in the performance’s planning.

While RAF takes great care to ensure the well-being of participants and a safe, collaborative program environment, our ability to do so depends, in part, on serious preparation of participants and their families for the experience. Participants applying to BBASI NY are expected to be: mature and focused, able to safely engage in independent time outside of class with few organized activities, know and comply with all program rules and requirements, and make responsible decisions in navigating New York City. While the program has volunteer parent chaperones for supervision of program’s group activities, students are not supervised individually. Nevertheless, an evening curfew, class attendance, healthy eating and lifestyle, and other rules will be strictly enforced by the chaperones and program staff (those who are 18 and over will have modified rules and regulations).

Interested participants will have the unique opportunity to audition for enrollment in the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow. Furthermore, one Female and one Male participant, enrolled in a six-week session of the Summer Intensive, will be selected for a RAF Performing Scholarship in Moscow which will enable them to perform at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy’s Gala Performance in Moscow! Boyscharacter

(*1st Place Male and Female Winner will be provided with visa support, economy air travel from NYC to Moscow and back, accommodations at the Academy, and training at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy)
(**2nd Place Male and Female Winner assumes all costs associated with the opportunity)

Location – Lincoln Center Area of Manhattan, NYC

Advanced students (15+ years) will have the opportunity to study ballet in the one and only New York City! BBASI studios are located in Manhattan’s beautiful Upper West Side.

While some organized activities will be provided, students will have ample time in their schedule so that they may enjoy New York City independently. This program is ideal for older students who are comfortable navigating a major city, are independent, mature, responsible and are excited about having more personal time in lieu of planned activities.

CodyandSadieClasses will be held in the following locations*:

The LaGuardia School

Housing in New York

The following options are offered by BBASI (Families are welcome to select their own housing options as well):

YESHIVA UNIVERSITY/ Beren Campus Residence will be available to the participants under 18 years only. This residence is centrally located in a residential neighborhood of Mid-town East Side at 151 East 36 Street. It is an inviting, renovated and modern facility which consists of air-conditioned single rooms (some double rooms may be available), two community lounges, a private outdoor garden and a laundry room. TV will be available in the common lounges. Each room is equipped with a small refrigerator, a microwave, desk and chair, a small dresser, closet space, wifi. NO BEDDING will be provided, residents must bring their own. Each floor has common bathroom/ shower area. The building has 24-hour on-site security along with parent volunteer chaperones residing on each floor. The facility will be occupied exclusively by the BBASI participants and will serve as the Program’s flagship home. This dorm is located within a few blocks of a major movie theater, shopping, restaurants, supermarkets and all of the main subways. Due to our commitment to keeping the program costs low, we no longer offer such organized weekend activity as a Ballet/ Broadway performance for BBASI NYC resident participants. Instead, we plan on organizing more community building events and activities at the Yeshiva/ Beren Campus Residence throughout the program, such as: social games night, movie nights, sessions parties.

STRATFORD ARMS Residence, an AMDA Residence, is located in the residential neighborhood of the Upper West Side at 117 West 70th Street. All participants aged 18 years and older will be offered this option for residency and will not be chaperoned (Participants will still be required to comply with any/all AMDA Residency Rules and Regulations and BBASI overall program rules). This residence is located in an area that has long been a center for the arts; countless museums, Broadway theatres, and Lincoln Center for performances of Ballet, Opera, and Symphony are all nearby. The double and single rooms are all air-conditioned, include refrigerators, and have shared bathrooms as well as common bathrooms. A kitchen, TV lounge, and a computer lab are located on the first floor of the dorm with an outdoor deck. The building has 24-hour on-site security. Students may be placed on the same floor with other students of AMDA. *Space at this facility is limited and is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis / no residents under the age of 18 are allowed without an express signed waiver and permission of BBASI. Please note that selection of this option at registration does not guarantee placement until a confirmation is received.

NEW FEATURE FOR NYC HOUSING:  New York program participants 18 years and older will be offered housing options that are not chaperoned by the BBASI chaperones. Every participant will still be required to adhere to all residence rules and policies as well as observe the BBASI NYC program code of conduct.

Note: Meals and meal plans are not included in the tuition cost. Students will have access to the Juilliard cafeteria, countless neighboring cafes, restaurants, and grocery stores. Transportation costs are also not included in the cost of tuition.

Suggested Links for Navigating NYC

Auditions

We welcome all serious classical ballet students and dancers to take part in the BBASI audition process.  Please know that your participation in a live audition does not obligate you for enrollment in the actual BBASI Program.  The auditions are a great opportunity for dancers and families to meet BBASI staff *, learn about the different programs and ask questions face to face.  The auditions are similar to the BBASI Program in that they tend to be challenging, but are non-competitive in their environment. All dancers should treat the audition as a class and try their individual best.  BBASI audition staff understands that dancers come from different training backgrounds, are on different levels and are of a varying age.  Each dancer is evaluated strictly within the context of his/her individual abilities, with the goal to ensure that they can be successful in the program.  Dancers who are successful in the BBASI Program demonstrate: age appropriate skill and coordination level, musicality, strong desire to achieve progress in their training through hard work and dedication, and thrive in a collaborative and non-competitive environment.

* While during BBASI all Program classes are taught by Bolshoi Ballet Academy's Teachers, please note that as the Academy is in session during the Auditions Period, local teachers are used for the Auditions.
